Blacksmith Drill Bits
Blacksmith Drill Bits are a type of Twist Drill that is rolled and typically has a reduced shank. These high-performance drill pieces can pierce through tough materials like Cast Iron.
Drill Bit Shape and Structure
A unique feature to the Blacksmith Drill Bit is the Reduced Shank. This means that the Drill Bits have a smaller diameter of a shank over the cutting head of the drill bit. Thus, allowing for a larger hole to be created whilst still being compatible with standard sizes of drill chucks on handheld drills. This DIN 338 Drill Piece has an 118° Point Angle with a Shape N Tip Grind allowing for a drilling depth of 5 times the standard diameter. The Shape Type N means that the Blacksmith Drill Bits have a Helical Point Cut with a normal ground twist structure giving a strong deep cut.
Drill Bit Craft and Material
The Blacksmith Twist Drill Bit has a more robust coating and structure compared to other Jobber Twist Drill Bits. The manufacturing procedure (with no structural disruption) solidifies the material making it more elasticated. This makes it more resistant to fracture and suitable for robust drilling units (e.g. hand-held drilling machines). Ideally suitable for drilling larger drilling diameters on all commonly used drill machines with a clamping chuck up to 13.0 mm. These drill bits are typically steam treated and have a black surface coating treatment which allows for a more robust tool piece against corrosion and a much stronger quality finish.
Blacksmith Drill Bit Tolerance and Capability
A typical Blacksmith Jobber Twist Drill Piece can withstand a clamping chuck of up to 13mm or ½ inch. Due to the Reduced Shank (where the shank has a smaller diameter over the cutting head of the drill bit), they can drill much larger holes within a material whilst also remaining compatible with standard sizes of drill chucks on handheld drills. The high strength and performance of the drill piece makes it ideal for drilling through hard materials such as Cast Iron and Bronze. Most Blacksmith Drills can handle Steel < 900 N/mm², as well as Aluminium, Brass and Plastics. Due to the shape and shank structure, Blacksmith Bits can drill up to 5 x the depth of a typical twist drill bit and the standard diameter
